Day Trip Itinerary: Farmington to the Four Corners
The Four Corners region, where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado meet on the Colorado Plateau, is known for big geology and deep cultural history. The Four Corners Monument is the specific, official site where you can stand at the intersection of the four corners states. It is on the Navajo Reservation and is managed as a Navajo Tribal Park, with local Navajo vendors often selling handmade jewelry and traditional foods in the plaza.
The Four Corners area is a little over an hour away from Farmington, and therefore an easy day trip to fit into your New Mexico itinerary. The Monument is managed by the Navajo Nation, so make sure to check opening hours before you go; it’s usually open from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, except on major holidays. The per-person entry fee is currently $8, and a National Park Pass is not accepted. You can expect this day trip to take 3 to 5 hours, but you can easily make it longer by stopping at nearby New Mexico landmarks.
The Four Corners Monument plaza is pretty simple, with most people excited to snap their classic photo upon arrival: hands and feet in four states at once, with the marker at the center! Once you’ve done that and taken the time to appreciate where you stand, walk around the Native Artisan stalls for locally made pieces of art, jewelry, and crafts, not to mention delicious Native food.
When you’re ready to leave the Four Corners monument, take the time on your way back to Farmington to explore other nearby attractions. Consider stopping at Aztec Ruins National Monument, known for exceptionally well-preserved Chacoan structures. Don’t miss the museum, the Aztec West great house, and a restored Great Kiva. Keep in mind, this is a sacred place to many Indigenous peoples. Another alternative is to visit Salmon Ruins, which includes a museum and an archaeological site, and is a wonderful place to learn about the area’s history and culture.
For a longer day, you can either head into Monument Valley or to Canyon de Chelly. Monument Valley is a little farther west and across the border in Arizona, on land that is still part of the Navajo Nation. One of the signature things to do in Monument Valley is the 17-mile loop, offering breathtaking views of the valley’s magnificent rock formations. South of Monument Valley is Canyon de Chelly, featuring even more stunning rock formations and canyons on the Colorado Plateau.
